Thor Finds His Power in Thor: Ragnarok

By Kathryn Holton

Thor: Ragnarok (2017)  is the sequel of Thor (2011) and Thor: Dark Worlds (2013). Ragnarok is the seventeenth Marvel Cinematic Studios (MCU) film. Ragnarok takes place during Captain America: Civil War (2016), and two years after Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).

In the movie, Chris Hemsworth's Thor becomes imprisoned on the planet Sakaar by Jeff Goldblum's character, the Grandmaster. After being imprisoned, Thor must fight in a gladiator contest. Thor soon discovers his opponent is his former friend and ally the Hulk, played by Mark Ruffalo. Thor must win the fight so he would leave Sakaar and defeat Hela, played by Cate Blanchett.

Tom Hiddleston’s Loki improved since the last MCU movies. In previous movies, Loki is the villain. However, in Ragnarok Loki fights for both sides. Ragnarok shows Loki is developing. He went from the villain to fighting with the heroes. Hopefully, MCU will continue with Loki’s development, making him a well rounded character. Ragnarok introduces Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie. Valkyrie is a former Valkyrior. Valkyriors, in the movies, protect Thor’s home planet, Asgard.

Ragnarok’s tone is different than the first two Thor movies. Ragnarok is more comedic and has a lighter atmosphere. After Dark Worlds, Marvel tried taking Thor in a new direction. This includes a new look for Thor. Thor is  known for his long hair, cape, and hammer. In Ragnarok, Thor has short hair, a ripped cape, and a broken hammer. This symbolizes the rebirth of Thor. Thor has more power and control. This movie represents Thor’s “coming to power” arc.

Ragnarok does have moments where characters from previous MCU movies acted differently. There are moments where Thor’s character said lines that felt  awkward and forced rather than flowing with the scene. The movie is still great and highly recommended to any superhero fans. Ragnarok does Thor justice, and it gives the build up to Avengers: Infinity War (2018). In the end of the movie, there are two after credit scenes. One gives information about Infinity War, and then the second scene is for comedic purposes.
