High School Grading Period Moves To Nine Weeks

By Katie Blevins

The grading period has gone from six weeks to nine weeks. This means students not only have longer to pull up any low grades, but they will also only get four report cards throughout the entire school year.

This system was introduced in order to help the students and the teachers.  Switching to a nine week grading period has many positive effects.

This is even better for classes that have an A and B day schedule because it will give the teachers more opportunities to give out assignments and put more grades in the gradebook.

More assignments sounds terrible at first. However, by the grading period being extended and having more grades and assignments it lowers the value of each assignment. So if a student does poorly on an assignment, it won't weigh as heavily on his/her final grade.

The grading period also has a positive effects on things that you wouldn’t think of such as the amount if paper we use.

Chief Hanson said he liked the switch because “It produces less paper, we save money on report cards and progress reports.”

Most of the time it seems like the end of the grading period is complete madness, with teachers trying to finish teaching all of the material so they can give a test before report cards come out.

Many students are also trying to pull up grades at the last minute and teachers are trying to update students’ grades.

Junior Abigail Lopez said “I like the new grading system because you have more time to fix an assignment if you forgot it.”

With the new grading system, students will now have more time to talk to their teacher about improving a grade, and the teachers have more time to input grades.

Freshman Jada Harrington said “I like it and I think it will help to keep my grades up.”

Since switching from the six week grading period to the nine week grading period, several schools have shown an increase in grades and promotion rates.

While longer grading periods means less report cards, students and parents can still view everything on Power School to stay informed.

Ultimately switching to a nine week grading period is an all around good thing because it helps all the students and teachers with getting grades in and keeping grades up.
