Media Center Faces New Changes

By Madelaine Bradley

The media center is undergoing some changes in the upcoming year. Renovations are planned out and there is a new librarian, Mrs. Maggie Dougherty.

The changes to the media center were inspired by the design of North Moore High School’s media center. “They had done an update and Mr. Christina was hoping we might take on a project to do something similar at Pinecrest,” said Mrs. Mollie Hipp, a board member of the PTSA.

The PTSA has made an initial donation for the renovations of the media center. There is discussion about budgeting for the renovations. The budgeting includes the construction and price of furniture. They are looking into a consultation with a professional fundraiser. The PTSA is hoping that the project gets enough donations by the spring to start the physical renovations over the summer. The completion date of the media center depends on the amount of donations. There is no set date for the completion of the new media center.

The entire project is being supervised by the PTSA and Pinecrest staff. Pinecrest has been consulting Roger Leeson, Director of Planning and Construction for Moore County Schools, and working with the county IT department. Christine Dandeneau, an architect for Dandeneau Architecture, designed the plans for the new media center. She kept the design close to the Brutalist style of Pinecrest. Brutalist is an industrial look that includes concrete, glass, wood, and metal.

The new media center isn’t the only thing that is changing. Pinecrest also has a new librarian, Mrs. Dougherty. She graduated from the University of South Florida and received her Masters of Library Science from East Carolina University. She used to be the librarian at Sandhills Community College, but came to Pinecrest to work more with the students after she started volunteering in Pinecrest’s library. She wanted to become a librarian because of the organization system and simple structure of libraries. The media center is going to improve this year by bringing in new and more interesting books. She enjoys working with the staff and says they are very supportive and patient. “I enjoy helping students find the resources they need for their classes and personal enrichment,” said Dougherty.
