Spring sports at Pinecrest are always full of excitement. There is soccer, baseball, softball, and lacrosse. In only the second year of the program last year, a stand out star of spring sports was Pinecrest Girls Lacrosse team. Affectionately known as PCGL, the team reached the playoffs with a very impressive team and this year are being moved to a new conference.

Workouts for this upcoming season started as early as December.

“Our workouts are designed and coached by a football coach from East Montgomery High School, so they’re pretty intense,” said senior Ava Germond, “They consisted of challenging full-body workouts, weightlifting, running, and stick work.”

Tryouts lasted from Monday, February 13 to Wednesday, February 15 and they  tested how well everyone could play and how in shape they were for the season. Since PCGL is still a small program, there is only a varsity team. However, after tryouts, the team is separated into playing and developing, where developing players will grow and advance their skills.

Junior Madelyn Foster has played on the team for three years, while also playing outside of the program with many of the girls for close to five years.

“I’m optimistic for this season because we have a lot of really good talent,” Foster said. “But we’ll have to work hard as nine seniors graduated.”

Senior Ava Germond has also played both years of the program so far and said, “The thing I’m most looking forward to this season is the new teams we are playing. Each year, our team gets better, and this year we are playing some of the best lacrosse teams in the state, such as East Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, and Cardinal Gibbons.”

The team's first game is a home non-conference game vs. Terry Sanford on Friday, February 24 at 5pm.
