Key Club Begins Again for the New School Year

By Madelaine Bradley

Key Club is an international foundation that pairs with the local Kiwanis Club in the area. This club teaches leadership skills and provides numerous opportunities to volunteer around the town. Key Club participates in highway cleanups, food drives, and volunteering at booths for festivals in Southern Pines.

Key Club has been an official part of Pinecrest since its opening in 1969. Key Club is run by the student officers and the teacher adviser, Debbie Davis. The president is senior James Kester, the vice president is senior Sylvia Hipp, the secretary is junior Kathryn Streahle, the co-treasurers are senior Hunter Jones and junior Caroline Baker, and the points manager is senior Connor Jenkins.  The student officers help with assigning projects and organizing the community service events.

Ms. Davis took over as teacher adviser five years ago after the previous teacher adviser, Vicky Reynolds, retired.

Ms. Davis said, “It is so fulfilling seeing kids help one another and have fun doing it.”

Kester said, “When I first joined the club, a lot of my brother’s friends were officers and I really looked up to them. After they graduated, I wanted to help make an impact on the underclassmen like the one that was made on me.”

Key Club meets after school  two Wednesdays each month from 3:50pm-4:15pm. Students can join Key Club by paying $20 each year, payment goes to different sections of Key Club. Key Club is helping at local elementary school fall festivals and a pumpkin decorating contest with the Aktion Club. So far this year Key Club has participated in Club Officer Training for our Division with Key Clubs of the Carolinas District was on September 24, 2017 and Southern Pines Primary Fall Festival was on September 29, 2017.
