Pinecrest Celebrates Homecoming 2017

By Alexys Ewing

When Homecoming was announced, students around campus started oozing excitement. Homecoming meant a lot of things: the dance, the big game, the parade, a pep rally, and spirit week. It was time for our school spirit to show.

The week before homecoming, tickets for the dance were open for  reservations. On Monday, September 25, 2017,  upperclassmen could reserve a ticket. Underclassmen were able to reserve a ticket the next day. If the $25 for the ticket wasn’t paid to the office by September 29, the reservation was lost and the ticket would be put up for sale once more. This was because of the limited amount of 100 tickets per grade, and it sure did create a sense of urgency among the student body.

Disregarding the ruckus of the previous week, the real fun flared up when the week of Homecoming arrived. It was finally Spirit Week. The themes included Monochrome Monday, Tacky Tuesday, Woke Up Like This Wednesday, and Tour Days Thursday. The week finished up with our school colors for Green and Gold Friday. Everywhere you looked, there were students participating in this display of school spirit. It was an exciting change for the school,  even if it was just for a week.

Senior Miriam Morales said, “Spirit week is so fun because people dress up in ways we don’t usually get to.”

On October 4, the Homecoming Parade started at 5:45pm in downtown Southern Pines. It was an opportunity for our school and the clubs within it to showcase school spirit. For the Homecoming Floats, third place was awarded to Pinehurst Elementary School, second place was awarded to Aberdeen Primary School, and first place was awarded to Southern Middle School. While Pinecrest  didn’t win any awards for its floats, it was an invaluable experience that Pinecrest loves to do every year. Senior Joseph Capstaff really enjoyed the parade, saying that it was refreshing to see “tons of different floats and participants.”

The 2017 Homecoming Dance was held at the Pine Needles Resort from 7:30 pm to 11pm on Saturday, October 7.  During that time, students from all grades got to mingle and dance with each other in stunning outfits. Even though it is only the beginning of the school year, this was a much needed break for most students at PHS. The entire experience will definitely be something that is not forgotten soon.
