Girls Golf Team off to a Great Start

By Kathryn Holton

On September 5, 2017, the Pinecrest Girls Golf team continued their winning streak. Senior Mackenzie Battle, sophomore Mara Hirtle, and sophomore Jaclyn Kenzel all tied for medals with a score of 35 for the first tournament.

The team practices on a number of different golf courses including Pinehurst Number One, Number Three, and Number Five.

“I am looking forward to improving my golf game and meeting new people that I can count on when I need them,” said freshman Jan Snotherly.

Since there is no junior varsity team, freshmen do not compete in tournaments. However, they can attend practices and school-held events as team members. Then the following year, they can try out to be on the varsity team.

“My personal goal for this season is to have my scoring average be under par,” Battle said. “I have a lot of faith in my team that we will perform well this year!”

On a course, there is an average amount of strokes for the whole. If a player meets the average, then they scored a par. Under par means that the player’s amount of strokes was less than the average amount of strokes.

The upcoming tournaments are October 2, 2017 and October 4, 2017. Pinecrest will be hosting the Tarheel Youth Golf Association Invitational on October 11, 2017. The course will have 18-holes and an individual stroke play. Each team will have four players, and they must have three individual 18-hole scores to qualify for the team championship.
