Feminism Club Discusses Real Issues

By Rachel Rodgers

Pinecrest High School has many clubs and afterschool programs but the Feminism Club has a meaning to the students who have started it.

Junior Haley Ledford started the Feminism Club “because I noticed that many of the students at Pinecrest had a really negative view on the philosophy, in that, many of them only knew the feminism from their parents’ time.”

The club is not exclusive to any gender and is open to anyone who wants to join. In the club, members will be learning about the true meaning of feminism and doing projects that help make a difference.

Last Oktoberfest, the club educated people on the reality of domestic violence and how it occurs at home and not just in the U.S.

Each of the club members and other students of Pinecrest have a different views on what feminism means to them.

“Feminism to me is, like I have said before, a philosophy or a way of life. So to me, that means that as a young woman, I am constantly evolving into the best version of myself and correcting my actions that might be problematic,” Ledford said.

Secretary sophomore Caroline Brewton said, “To me, Feminism Club is about dispelling a stereotype that feminism is somehow advocating for the demise of men, or that it isn’t needed.”

If you would like to join the Feminism Club, meetings take place in room 2203 every Wednesday until 4:30 pm.

Public Affairs officer, junior Allyson Patti, works on the Feminism Club banner.
