November 1 Marks the Beginning of College Application Month

By Megan Petero

Starting November 1, 2017, Pinecrest counselors will begin helping senior with the first week of College Application Month. The counselors include: Jerry Bittle for last names A-C, Sarah Rabb for last names D-I, Kathy Hopkins for last names J-McH, Pam Collins for last names McI-Sa, and Dustin Cherry for last names Sb-Z.

“College Application Month is to highlight the application process and all of its components. This includes, but is not limited to, the FAFSA, Residency Determination Service (RDS), and the application process itself,” said Cherry. “Some colleges also waive their application fees, which allows students to take advantage of a free application.”

Week 1: FAFSA/RDS

Week 2: Preparing to Apply

Week 3: Free Application Week

Week 4: Follow Up, which will provide students with additional help on topics from previous weeks.

During these four weeks, the counselors will help with the designated weekly topics and write college recommendations for students.

There are also some important dates to note during College Application Month.

November 14: Sandhills Promise Presentation at Sandhills Community College (SCC) at 6:30pm.

November 15: FAFSA Day. From 10am-2pm, Mr. Jonathan Garrison from SCC will help with the FAFSA and SCC applications. From 5pm-7pm, parents and guardians can receive FAFSA help in the media center.

The counselors will be available during all four lunches in the media center. “We are also available in our offices at other times,” said Cherry. “Our doors are always open.”
