Amnesty International Focuses on Human Rights

By Megan Petero

Amnesty International, a club at Pinecrest founded by juniors Connor Jenkins and Sylvia Hipp, began during the 2015-16 school year and is still going strong today.

“We have been adjusting to our new role in the school, and we have only been able to complete a few projects, but we are finally gaining traction,” said co-president Jenkins.

Jenkins and Hipp work together as co-presidents of the club.

Projects have included a letter writing campaign against HB2 to NC Governor Pat McCrory, a food drive for BackPack Pals of Moore County, and a Krispy Kreme doughnut fundraiser for the club.

Amnesty International’s officers are vice president senior Caroline O’Connor, secretary senior Charlotte Ix, and project managers sophomore Caroline Brewton and senior Emma Smits.

Besides the officers, the club includes many members who joined because of what the club stands for.

“I joined because it’s really important to be aware of human rights abuses in the world and do something about them,” said junior Haley Ledford.

“The purpose of Amnesty International is to ensure that human rights are respected and maintained around the world; in the event that human rights are either being violated or suspected of being violated, Amnesty International steps in to draw attention to such injustices and call to world leaders to end these injustices,” said Jenkins.

Amnesty International has partnered with Key Club, National Honor Society, and UNICEF.

They are also looking to partner with the Pinecrest Feminism Club and work with local organization Friend-to-Friend to combat domestic violence.

Jenkins said, “I enjoy that we are able to have fun in projects with our peers while also contributing towards an incredibly important cause, which simultaneously supports people around the world.”
